What Hypnotherapy is

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind.  It may surprise you to learn that you experience trance states on a daily basis, probably several times in a day !  We’ve all experienced day dreaming or, whilst reading a good book or watching a film, been totally absorbed into the world of the story whilst being peripherally aware of the real world around us.  How many times have you made a familiar trip by road or train just to suddenly realise that you can’t specifically recall the last 15 minutes of your journey for that occasion ?

When you drift off to sleep each night, your mind starts becoming free of verbal thinking, (left brain), and enters a more visual state, (right brain), more akin to dream sleep.  This transitory stage is a type of trance state – neither asleep nor awake, prone to imagery and association, with a background feeling of calmness and relaxation.

..and what it is not   

Hypnosis is not a mechanism for unscrupulous people to take advantage of a subject.  Nobody can be hypnotised against their will, and someone in a hypnotic state is able to reject any suggestion being made to them that is against their wishes and, in fact, can open their eyes and waken, fully alert, if they feel it necessary.  However, they may feel so relaxed that they simply enjoy this time.

The key to successful hypnotherapy is cooperation between client and therapist.  It’s the pursuit of a common goal that leads to a successful outcome.  If you’ve ever been put off the idea of hypnosis because of the routines of a stage hypnotist, don’t be.  Even in these scenarios, where individuals appear to be performing embarrassing or demeaning acts, the participants have not lost control – they are still willingly cooperating with the entertainer to produce the ‘effect’, and the hypnotist will have carefully groomed through volunteers selecting those who subconsciously wish to ‘perform’.
